This dramatic photograph was taken in Avignon at the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes). It shows one of the sides of the palace, the sun reflecting down highlights the architectural features. To the right of the image there is a rather grand building which is not part of the Palace of the Popes complex. In the gap between the two buildings there are a number of figures in silhouette. During the 14th century Avignon became an alternative Christian Capital with many Popes choosing to reside there, resulting in the building of the palace.
