Description
An eighteenth century witch bottle with its "spell" intact inside, which was discovered on National Trust land on the Isle of Purbeck in 1986. The bottle was found inverted, as was the custom, in a stone boundary wall. The bottle is an example of a spiritual midden (an item to ward off evil spirits). The spell is thought to have been to ward off cattle distemper.
