Description

The Francis Turbine at Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, installed in 1905 to replace the water wheel. Turbines comprise a series of blades arranged around the bottom of a curving pipe. Water from the pipe turns the turbine which drives a vertical shaft more efficiently than a water wheel.
