Oil painting on panel, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (1566-1601), Marcus Geeraerts, the younger (Bruges 1561/2 - London 1635/6) and Studio, dated, top left: 1599. Almost half-length, turned slightly to right, gazing at spectator; reddish moustache and spade beard, dark reddish hair brushed away from forehead, ruddy complexion; wearing a white satin doublet with lace collar under a white linen ruff; the lesser George (not seen in this version) hangs from a dark green ribbon; dark brown background.
