"This is an image of the Ark Royal, after it had been painted for the Queen's visit to Liverpool. Here it is still being built and has cranes all around. There are warehouses in the foreground of the image. This is a different view of the ship as seen in one of Hardman's best known images The Birth of the Ark Royal"", 770 ECH/1/1/001 and a cropped version of 770 ECH/1/1/148."""

Menai Suspension Bridge

This is an image, of the Menai Suspension Bridge, it is one of the best known works of Thomas Telford (1757- 1834). It crosses the Menai Straits from Anglesey to Bangor. Hardman successfully captures the grandeur of this impressive piece of engineering. The specifications for the bridge, constructed 1819-1826, was that is needed to be high enough to let the largest ships to sail below with masts erect. The bridge, at the time of its construction in the 1820s, was the longest bridge in the world at that time. Two towers, 153 feet above the high-water mark , had sixteen chains hanging from them holding , each 9-foot. These chains held up roadway, 579 feet in length and 30 foot wide. Between 1938 and 1940 the old iron chains were replaced with new steel ones, all while traffic continued to cross. The stone used for the arches and piers was limestone quarried from Penmon Quarries at the north end of the strait, then carried down by boat. The ironwork came from Hazeldean's foundry near Shrewsbury.

Photograph of Hope Street looking towards the R. C. Cathedral. To the right of the image there is the Philharmonic Hall which is slightly masked by a tree. To the left the building which used to be The School for the Blind with the Philharmonic Dining Rooms the other side of the road. The car in the centre of the piece is traveling down Hardman Street which dissects Hope Street at this point. The Cathedral is clearly this main focus of the composition.

Ranelagh Sreet, Central Station

This image is a view Ranelagh Street, Liverpool, at a time when trams were still running in Liverpool (until 1957). It shows the old entrance to Central Station (now just an underground station). Advertisements are visible, one of them being for Bovril, and the street is quite busy with people. The white buildings (John Lewis and the Adelphi Hotel) on the right and the row of white buildings on the left contrast well with the darker buildings in the foreground of the print.

Ivor Novello V

This is a portrait of the famous Welsh actor, composer, playwright and impresario. There are numerous photographs of him in the collection. In this image he is dressed in character and is looking over his shoulder anxiously. He is wearing a jacket, which looks well worn, and a shirt, which is unbuttoned at the neck, underneath. Hardman writes in his notes that when he met him he had ambitions to make a name for himself as a straight actor in serious drama and used Liverpool as a trying-out ground for at least two of his plays, one of which was 'Liliom' (Ferenc Molnar, 1909, tr. 1921). Fay Compton was his leading lady. I photographed him on several occasions and learned that he did not like his left profile. He always had to be taken from his right profile and on stage and in films he arranged things so that he presented, as far as possible this side to the audience. When he became playwright, actor, composer and producer rolled into one there was no one left to oppose his wishes".

Edward ChambrÈ Hardman with Camera and Car

This is an image of the photographer, Edward ChambrÈ Hardman, taken by his wife Margaret. It show him standing up in his car, park on a country road, with its roof partially down. He is holding a camera and looking at the sky with it's dark clouds above him. In many of Hardman's landscape images, such as The Rick"" 770 ECH/1/1/003 , clouds play a significant part in the composition.

I put the camera on a tripod and used the delayed action shutter to allow myself time to run to the appropriate spot and assume a nonchalant attitude. 3¼ x 4¼ Sanderson camera, pale yellow filter.
Loch Alsh and Skye

This landscape print is of Loch Alsh and Skye in Scotland and its alternative title is Over the Sea to Skye". The sunlight through the clouds on Loch Alsh creates a beautiful effect as it reflects on the water. The mountain in the foreground is very dark as are the clouds above. Hardman wrote in his notebook about this- "After a week of almost continuous rain the sun shone again through gaps in moving bands of clouds, sending down beams as from a spotlight. Constantly altering, the scene presented a fresh picture every few minutes. A memorable day in July 1935"". Published in the Liverpool Daily Post July 14th 1937 with the caption ""Over the Sea to Skye. An evening view along Lochalsh with the Kyles of Lochalsh in the middle distance and the mountains of Skye beyond". Hardman made the image into a calendar in 1940. The print was taken from an original Eastman Nitrate Kodak negative which has been retouched. Exhibitions- London Salon, 1967, Chester, 1968, Bluecoat Chambers "One Man Show" Liverpool, November 1968.

Museum Steps

This is a view of Liverpool from the steps of Liverpool Museum. This was taken just after the Second World War and is a view of Whitechapel, Manchester Street.Hardman attempted to capture the effect of lighting up time at dusk which he found hard due to the residual light in the sky tending to eclipse the light coming from the street lamps. The scene is covered in snow showing it was taken in winter. A number of figures are in the background. Two cars are parked outside the museum but the roads are clear except for one bus. The clouds are dark which contrast well with the snow. The lamp and railing from the steps are in the foreground and frame the snow covered scene. He creates an effect of evening light by making the print toned with gold to give it a blue cast.

Rainy Day in Chester

Photograph by Chambré Hardman of a street scene of Northgate Street, Chester. The image captured here is effective as it has a great sense of atmosphere. The rain has created a misty feeling and the light which reflects from it has create silhouettes of the two women in the foreground and the building they are walking past. The sign for "The Liverpool Arms" public house is in the foreground and contrasts well with lighter building in the distance. There are a number of cars and people in this image. To the left of the composition there is a sign for a shop call "Hooleys". Hardman has written about this image "Moments when the street traffic sorts itself into a simple and satisfactory composition are rare, and much patience has to be exercised. When the right arrangement comes about it is a matter of a split second". Taken with a Rolleiflex Camera, 1/100 sec. at f. 11. HP3 Exhibited 29th July- 25 September 1994 Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and 5th November - 4th December 1994, National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford. Published in "The Photograms of the Year 1949". Displayed in the "Behind the Lens" Exhibition at the Picton Library, Central Library, Liverpool March-May 2004. Margaret's husband, Edward Chambré Hardman has written of this image, Cleverly seen and caught by my wife on the skating rink of a Swiss monastery. The image was made using a 3½ x 2½ negative in a Voightlander camera.

The Birth of the Ark Royal

Photograph of the HMS Ark Royal, taken from the top of Holt Hill in Birkenhead, by Chambré Hardman. The ship had just been painted white, as part of preparations for its launch from the Cammell Laird shipyard by the Queen Mother. This is one of Hardman's most famous photographs, which was retouched in order to create such an impressive picture. For example; the white washed gable end nearest the camera was eliminated by the application of coccine nouvelle (a red dye) to the positive transparency, as it detracted from the contrast of the ship - "I was trying to recreate what I had seen, to produce an effect, and anything that goes against the effect I want, I rule out." E. Chambré Hardman, 1983. In 1958 the image was acquired by the trustees of the American Stephen Tyng Collection. In 1959 it was published in the British Journal of Photography under the title "Where Great Ships are Built" rather than "The Birth of the Ark Royal". The photograph was taken using a 3½ x 4¼ " revolving back Auto Graflex with a Teleros 13" focal length lens on Kodak XX film. (Rob Powell, Photographers Gallery Exhibition 'Photographs in Context' 1983) Exhibited at the Open Eye Gallery in 1980. Displayed in the "Behind the Lens" Exhibition at the Picton Library, Central Library, Liverpool March-May 2004. Taken April 1950

The Copse

This is a landscape scene from Galloway, Scotland. The image is also know as "The Copse on Harvest Hill". It is of a little copse on a hill surrounded by sweeping fields. It draws in the eye of the viewer as its tones are dark in contrast to the much lighter shades of the surrounding fields. The enormous clouds which dominate the top two thirds of the piece dwarfs the rest of the composition. This image is an example of Hardman's "control" over the images he captured. The term "control by patience" has been used to describe Hardman especially in regard to these images. Exhibitions- Bluecoat Chambers, Liverpool 1957 and London Salon of Photography 1953.

A Memory of Avignon

Photographed in a garden café on a visit to Provence, France in 1926. The image depicts three figures sitting around a café table on a sunny afternoon in a tree lined boulevard in Avignon. The figures are Harold Hinchcliffe Davies (well known Liverpool Architect) on the right, Nora Davies, his wife on the left, and (centre) Fred Jenkins (Liverpool Architect). They holidayed together, while a young Margaret Mills (later Hardman) looked after the photographic studio in Liverpool.

The Axe Tavern, A Rainy Day

Photograph of the Axe Tavern and Yacht Inn in Chester. This is taken from the same angle as Axe Tavern and Yacht Inn (770 ECH/1/1/0740), but this image was taken at night when it had been raining, as the cobbled streets are still wet. The darkness has made the sign for the Axe Tavern stand out much better, and in this image there are no people. The image was taken on Nicholas Street where the 200 year-old Axe Tavern (since renamed the "Falchion and Firkin" and then "Bar Coast" is situated. The Yacht Inn is shown at the end of this street where it meets Watergate Street. It was demolished so that an inner ring road could be built (completed 1972). The Hardmans had a second studio in Chester from 1938-1958.

Mount Street Snow Scene

This is a snow scene taken on Mount Street Liverpool and shows a couple walking along the street as the snow is still falling. The street lamp gives added decoration to the image due to the dark of the metal in contrast with the snow. The snow on the cars which are parked along the road is very thick, as is the snow on the pathway. The road in the background which dissects this road is Rodney Street. This image seems to have been taken in the 1960s due to the dress of the couple and the cars on the road.
